As every Scrabble aficionado knows, each year new words are introduced into Collins' official word list. Refelecting the doom and gloom of recent times the dictionary compilers at Collins introduced 'credit crunch', 'downturn' and 'sub-prime' in 2008.

Collins Scrabble DictionaryIn keeping with the theme of economic gloom the list of words to watch in 2009 includes 'staycation' along with 'bad bank' (state owned financial institution), 'recessionista' (a person who wears clothes considered appropriate to an economic downturn), 'credit crunched' (adversely affected by a credit crunch) and 'brickor mortis' (a period of difficulty in the housing market).

New words are monitored over a period of time to determine if they warrant an entry. Staycation will make it into the dictionary after being judged on how often it is used, where it is used and in how many texts it appears in over the course of the year.

Cormac McKeown, the head of content at Collins, said "We'll be keeping an eye on these rather gloomy expressions. With a bit of luck most will have slipped off the radar this time next year, but my money is on bad bank and staycation to stay the course."

However, while we trumpet the case for staycation to be included in the dictionary, here at Staycation.org.uk we don't believe that it is a gloomy expression. After all, with a little imagination, a staycation can be as relaxing and refreshing as any other holiday.

As we know you're interested, other words under consideration reflect the current trend in social networking and include 'defriend', 'social notworking' and 'textism'.
