Prince Charles' accounts have recently been released and show that the heir to the throne helped to cut costs by holidaying in the UK reports The Independent.

Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall enjoy a staycation at BirkhallThe Prince and the Duchess of Cornwall embraced the staycation in no small measure shunning skiing trips and other overseas holidays.

As economic gloom gripped the UK, the Royal couple decided to enjoy holidays at their favourite home Birkhall on the Balmoral estate, which used to belong to the Queen Mother.

Relaxing staycation pursuits they enjoy here include fishing and walking in the stunning Scottish countryside. The Summer, New Year and Easter were all spent holidaying at home in Royal Deeside.

A senior aide to the Prince, Sir Michael Peat said: "All holidays last year were taken in the UK. It doesn't necessarily mean that all holidays will be taken in the UK forever. It is a recession and we are looking at all costs very carefully. Clearly with the example the Prince of Wales sets, he looks at his personal costs before he looks at his official costs because his official costs are related to his duties and responsibilities to the country and clearly he doesn't want to cut back there if at all possible."

Now, we realise that not everyone has a choice of homes in which to enjoy a staycation and it hasn't escaped our notice that not everyone enjoys fishing rights in their back garden. However, with some creative thought and help from these humble pages anyone can make the most of a holiday at home and we applaud the example set by the future King.
