You might think you've read all that could possibly be set to print about the global recession, credt crunch and economic downturn. Well, here's one from across the pond as reported by USA Today. Apparently even sharks are now feeling the fallout from the global economic doom and gloom!

Shark attacks are down due to people holidaying at homeResearchers report that shark bites are down on previous years and believe that this is due to less people visiting beaches and more people choosing to staycation at home.
Worldwide, shark attacks dropped to their lowest level in five years.

However, it should be emphasised that shark attacks are incredibly rare with only 59 reported cases worldwide in 2008 including four fatalities. According to John Carlson of the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administrations's Fisheries Service (go on, try saying that after a couple of glasses of wine) more people die golfing in Florida due to lightning strikes than experience shark attacks. To be extra safe, Mr Carlson goes on to advise swimmers to avoid the surf at dusk and dawn, take off jewelry (especially ankle bracelets) and, rather helpfully in our opinion, "if you are swimming in a pool of bait fish, get out of the water".

Well, that's that then. It's staycation summer again for us - I'm putting the golf clubs back in the loft and cancelling the holiday to Disneyworld in Florida. The kids will understand.
